College Football Rankings: Projected Top 25 after Week 7
By John Buhler
With Week 7 of the 2016 college football season in the books, here is a look at what the AP Top 25 Poll could look like entering Week 8.
With only one team in the AP Top 25 still playing (Boise State Broncos), it’s safe to say we now have a better idea what next week’s poll in Week 8 might look like. There were a few minor upsets in Week 7, but nothing really major to significantly shake up the Top 25.
Both Ohio State and Clemson needed overtime to stay undefeated. As it stands now, there are 11 undefeated teams left in Division I football, assuming Boise State can hold off the Colorado State Rams late on Saturday night.
Those teams are the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Baylor Bears, the Boise State Broncos, the Clemson Tigers, the Michigan Wolverines, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Texas A&M Aggies, the Washington Huskies, the West Virginia Mountaineers, and the Western Michigan Broncos.
The College Football Playoff picture is getting clearer by the week. Here is a look at what the AP Top 25 Poll could look like heading into Week 8:
- Alabama Crimson Tide: Best undefeated team in the country, without question.
- Ohio State Buckeyes: Needed to beat Wisconsin on the road in overtime, but still No. 2.
- Clemson Tigers: Needed overtime to beat North Carolina State at home. Only undefeated left in the ACC.
- Michigan Wolverines: Michigan stands pat at No. 4 with their bye.
- Washington Huskies: Washington holds steady at No. 5 with their bye.
- Texas A&M Aggies: Texas A&M remains No. 6 with their bye.
- Louisville Cardinals: It wasn’t pretty, Louisville is still the best one-loss team in the nation after beating Duke on Friday night.
- Nebraska Cornhuskers: Close call in Bloomington, but the Cornhuskers are 6-0 after beating Indiana.
- Baylor Bears: Baylor destroyed Kansas to move to 6-0. Best undefeated team in the Big 12.
- Houston Cougars: Needed a goal-line stand to beat Tulsa, but still feel like a top-10 team for now.
- Boise State Broncos*: Should be able to beat Colorado State to get to 6-0 on the season.
- Florida Gators: First place in the SEC East never felt so good.
- Wisconsin Badgers: Wisconsin asserts itself as the best two-loss team in the country.
- Florida State Seminoles: Florida State is a near second-best two-loss team to Wisconsin.
- West Virginia Mountaineers: The Mountaineers are undefeated still? They destroyed Texas Tech.
- Tennessee Volunteers: The Volunteers ran out of luck and lost their grip on the SEC East.
- Oklahoma Sooners: After starting the year out 1-2, no Big 12 team is going to want to play Oklahoma. They look so dangerous on offense.
- Utah Utes: The Utes are bowl eligible after surviving against Oregon State. Might be the team to beat in the Pac-12 South.
- Arkansas Razorbacks: Big win at home over Ole Miss. It was the first SEC win of the year for the Razorbacks.
- Miami Hurricanes: Two straight losses hurts Mark Richt’s chance to play for an ACC Championship.
- Virginia Tech Hokies: Just an awful loss to the Syracuse Orange in the Carrier Dome.
- Auburn Tigers: Auburn’s two losses are to Clemson and Texas A&M. Let that sink in.
- Western Michigan Broncos: P.J. Fleck will get a big boy job in 2017. His Broncos are for real.
- Navy Midshipmen: Navy stays in the Top 25 despite having their game against ECU postponed for a few days.
- North Carolina Tar Heels: North Carolina might be the team to beat in the ACC Coastal.
