Ryan O’Reilly scored a very soft goal on Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot.

The Edmonton Oilers were off to an excellent start to their 2016-17 NHL season entering Sunday’s matchup against the Buffalo Sabres. Fans expected to see Connor McDavid take on Jack Eichel in a battle of the first two picks of the 2016 NHL Draft. What they got was a battle between a puck and Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot. The puck, shot by Ryan O’Reilly, won the battle as O’Relly scored from center ice after Talbot lost the puck.

O’Reilly was simply dumping the puck into the offensive zone following the end of a shift. However, he got rewarded for putting the puck on net by scoring his second goal of the night. O’Reilly also scored in the first period to give Kyle Okposo his first assist in a Sabres uniform.

Just when you think the Oilers have maybe ceased being a punchline, they do something like this. This is a horrible goal for Talbot to allow. He lost track of a puck which he should have kept his eye on. Talbot fails to get his body in front of the puck and he paid for it. Instead of blocking the shot with his body, he tries to grab it with his glove. A terrible mistake from Talbot.

The Sabres are off to a strong start against the Oilers. They are up 4-2 after 40 minutes despite being without star forwards Evander Kane and Jack Eichel. The debut of Okposo has certainly been a huge help to O’Reilly and the Sabres. So far tonight, the Sabres’ top line of O’Reilly, Sam Reinhart, and Okposo has domianted. This is a very good sign because they will need to continue to dominate in order for the Sabres to have a chance at the playoffs this season.
