3 reasons North Dakota State Bison should have been in Big 12 talks
By John Buhler
1. Big 12 needs to think outside the box to survive
It’s only the third year of the College Football Playoff era in Division I football, but the Big 12 is gradually becoming the fifth of the five best conferences. The SEC has been a beast for well over a decade with all that elite talent in the Southeast. The ACC has amped up its coaching acumen and its football powers have improved.
The Big 10 has improved in the coaching department and is getting the most out of its players in the Midwest. Adding Colorado and Utah has made the Pac-12 one of the most competitive conferences in the Power 5. The Big 12 likes to run the Air Raid offense…
Texas has been bad for the last several years. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, and TCU have carried the Big 12 while Texas is in its quagmire. Those four schools have done alright in that regard, but Texas needs to right its ship to save the Big 12. Not sure it will happen in time.
To keep the Big 12 from eventually being dismantled, the conference needs to do something big. More importantly, it needs to do something different. The Big 12 has been a step or two behind the other Power 5’s since the beginning.

Adding North Dakota State would have been a huge splash in the national media’s eyes. With the Bison winning at a high level throughout its history, what if they are the 21st Century’s diamond in the rough in college football? The Big 12 might not be desperate enough to consider North Dakota State, but the conference has to think differently to survive in the College Football Playoff era.
