Despite Monday night’s announcement against growing the conference, will the Big 12 still expand in the future?
On Monday night, the Big 12 held a press conference to announce their future. There had been speculation about them potentially adding teams to the 10-school group, so the matter was addressed in a presser led by Oklahoma President David Boren and commissioner Bob Bowlsby.
To start the media event, Boren said the Big 12 wouldn’t expand. He noted there had been discussions and even a vote, but all 10 schools voted unanimously to not grow the conference.
The question of potentially expanding in the future was brought up which led to Boren saying they decided not to — for now. He most notably said, “Right now it’s best to stay where we are”. It creates the possibility that the situation will be addressed at some point, but not in the very near future.

Leaving the door open again.
Boren: "We all came to a unanimous feeling that this is not the right time" for expansion.

They apparently held meetings on expansion to bring “closure”. Maybe there had been talk within the conference about adding more teams, but obviously that won’t be happening.
Big 12 commish Bob Bowlsby: "I made one recommendation. We should bring this process to closure. We shouldn't kick can down the road."

If anything, the “expansion” talk that was discussed surrounded adding new technologies. A Big 12 Network was mentioned as well, but they decided to not go through with it in the end. This would have joined the ACC Network, Longhorn Network, and SEC Network, among others.
It’s interesting that these comments were made with all the mentions of the Cincinnati Bearcats being brought into the fold. BYU had been an option as well, but they chose not to join the conference. Houston may have been the third player, but the school decided against this.

So, the Big 12 will remain as is for the foreseeable future. They have a strong conference with the likes of Baylor, Oklahoma, and Texas leading the way. So, these 10 schools should be fine with the way their setup already is.
