CSKA Moscow are running out of time if they want to qualify for the round of 16. The Russian champions are bottom of Group E after a draw against Bayer Leverkusen in their first game and a loss to Tottenham in their second. Monaco, meanwhile, are quietly enjoying a very good season. They’re third in Ligue 1, having scored the most goals in the division, and top Group E by a point. That their top scorer, Fabinho, is a defender suggests that scoring rate may not be sustainable, but it’s also possible their lack of reliance on any one elite goalscorer will help them withstand the potential loss of players to injury as the season wears on. Monaco’s best result came in their first Champions League match away at Tottenham, when a 2-1 win put them in control of what looks to be a very competitive group.
