Overwatch will get an official eSports league
It’s no secret that Overwatch has made a name for itself in the competitive circles of gaming and Blizzard plans to take that to the next level with an official Overwatch League.
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has confirmed that Blizzard will be hosting an Overwatch League sometime in the future.
Kotick was interviewed during Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit to discuss his thoughts about about the future of virtual reality gaming and eSports. Kotick touched on the popularity and viewership of eSports, which is when he mentioned Overwatch.
“You will have the Overwatch League which will have a certain number of teams. Those teams will be a combination of professional sports teams as owners and endemic sports teams as owners,” Kotick said.
This is exciting news for the competitive Overwatch community. In less than half a year since official release, Overwatch has come into its own as a game perfect for both casual and competitive play. The combination of individual skill with team strategy make for exciting matches that are thrilling to watch.
Overwatch has also been no stranger to the tournament scene. There have already been several prominent tournaments featuring Overwatch pro teams, and many of those teams have already made names for themselves. Over $1,000,000 in prize money has been doled out.
Blizzard itself organized the Overwatch World Cup, bringing together the best players to have them represent their country or region. In fact, the last 16 teams are set to battle it out at BlizzCon in just a few weeks.

All of this is to say that the creation of an Overwatch League is the natural next step for a game as fun and beloved as Overwatch. While no further specifics about the league have been revealed, BlizzCon is right around the corner. Let’s hope that more details are coming soon.
