After their 6-1 defeat away at Bournemouth last weekend, Hull have now lost five and drawn one of their last six Premier League matches. While four of those losses came against Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, the thrashing at Bournemouth raises serious concerns. Hull started the season better than anyone expected, earning seven points from their first four games, but the drop off since then suggests their tag as relegation favorites was warranted. Mike Phelan has been appointed full-time manager, and his first task is to re-establish the defensive solidity that served the Tigers so well in their opening fixtures.
Stoke, in contrast, are trending upwards. They’ve now picked up five points from their last three games after losing four in a row. Joe Allen has been the star. He scored the equalizer against Manchester United three weeks ago and scored twice as Stoke beat Sunderland last week for their first win of the campaign. Allen shouldn’t have to carry the goal scoring burden for a side containing the likes of Wilfried Bony and Marko Arnautovic, but manager Mark Hughes will be grateful for his contributions all the same. Stoke are still in the relegation zone, but they have the talent to push on towards mid-table now they’ve got their first win of the season under their belt.

With a win, Stoke would leapfrog Hull in the table and push the Tigers even closer to the drop zone. Given the form these two sides are in, that doesn’t seem unlikely.
