Chicago’s road to the World Series began with 4 competitive games against the San Francisco Giants in the National League Division Series. Chicago shut out the Giants 1-0 in Game 1 and had a solid 5-2 performance in Game 2. The Giants battled back to take Game 3, but the Cubs dug in and took the series with a 6-5 win in Game 4. So much for the Giants even-year World Series streak. A new winning streak was about to begin.
The Cubs came out strong in the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They took Game 1, 8-4, but Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers blanked them in Game 2 with a 1-0 win. Game 4 was a 10-2 barn burner that evened the series and gave the Cubs much needed momentum to push through the rest of the series. Game 5 was a repeat of Game 1, with the Cubs scoring 8 runs to win 8-4 and jump ahead in the series 3-2.
Saturday’s Game 6 saw pitcher Kyle Hendricks throw 7 nearly flawless innings in a 5-0 shutout that gave the Chicago Cubs their first pennant win since 1945 and punched their ticket to the 2016 World Series.
