Texas Longhorns true freshman quarterback Shane Buechele burns the Kansas State Wildcats secondary with this 80-yard touchdown pass to Devin Duvernay.
The Texas Longhorns needed a score trailing the Kansas State Wildcats, 14-0 in the second quarter of their Big 12 game in Manhattan. Longhorns true freshman quarterback Shane Buechele proceeds to unleash an 80-yard aerial strike to wide receiver Devin Duvernay to cut the Wildcats’ lead in half.
Buechele is only a true freshman, but he has been a huge bright spot for Charlie Strong’s underwhelming Texas football team. He has shown that he can go vertical with the best gunslingers in the Big 12. This touchdown pass to Duvernay was marvelous.
Texas’ issues in 2016 have been almost entirely on the defensive end. Yes, Buechele is thriving in prototypical Big 12 Air Raid attack, but the Longhorns defense has been pitiful this season. It’s especially troubling that Strong is considered a defensive guru as a head coach.
Changing offensive philosophies has forced Strong’s defense to play more minutes per game that he had his Louisville Cardinals playing at his previous job. It’s been done en vogue and might end up costing Strong his head coaching job after just three seasons.

Buechele already has the look of the best Texas signal caller since Colt McCoy. He will be a great player for the Longhorns through the 2018 college football season. If he can continue to spin the ball like this, we are looking at potentially a first-round NFL talent. However, Texas will only go as far as its 2016 defense will allow it.
