4. Teams should pause before giving Tom Herman money

It seems like that it was just a few weeks ago that everyone wanted the biggest schools in the nation to throw all of their money at Houston’s Tom Herman. That’s still likely going to happen, but maybe some teams might give pause now.

After falling to Navy and SMU, the Houston Cougars have not been playing good football lately and their execution hasn’t been there on the field. That should give some teams some cause for concern before they go wildly throwing their money at Herman.

They need to watch how the Cougars finish out the year and determine if he is the right guy for the job. It’s always a risky endeavor to go with a non-power five conference coach over a proven one and Houston bottoming out has perhaps raised some questions.

At the end of the day, someone is going to bite and make the call. That team is likely the Texas Longhorns after they dump Charlie Strong. If the Longhorns get burned yet again, then non-power five coaches will have a tougher climb.
