Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. will wear a pair of “Break the Silence” spikes in support of ending domestic violence before Week 7’s game.
The NFL is once again completely tone-deaf when it comes to domestic violence. New York Giants kicker Josh Brown has been put on the commissioner’s exempt list after his domestic violence case has been re-opened.
Baltimore Ravens outspoken wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. is not appreciative of how NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is handling another high-profiled domestic violence incident in the NFL. Smith plans to wear a pair of purple “Break the Silence” spikes in support of ending domestic violence. Here are the cleats he will wear in Week 7’s road game against the New York Jets on Sunday.
It’s ironic that a player on the Ravens is the one being most vocal about NFL players involved in domestic violence disputes. This is because former Ravens and Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice essentially ended his career by striking his fiancé in an elevator, back in 2013. The video surfaced and the Ravens had no choice but to cut him.
Update: Smith will be inactive against the Jets, but is allowed on the sideline
Smith won’t remove these purple Under Armor cleats willingly. He’s trying to stick it to the NFL for failing to be more proactive in handling domestic violence issues. Will Smith be fined for wearing these spikes by the NFL? Absolutely. And it’s kind of deplorable, honestly.
