Arthur Abraham pulls out of scheduled rematch with Murray
Arthur Abraham has pulled out of his Nov. 12 showdown with Martin Murray due to unknown reasons.
Earlier this month, it was announced that super middleweights Arthur Abraham and Martin Murray will fight each other again as part of a Matchroom Sport card in Monte Carlo. However, that plan is no more. On Tuesday, Abraham pulled out of the Nov. 12 fight for unspecified reasons.
The same day, Martin Murray took to Twitter to let his fans know the details. “Just to let [you] know that my rematch with Abraham is off not due to him being injured. Just in the process of sorting another opponent now”, is what Murray wrote on Twitter.
Their first fight took place in Abraham’s home territory in Germany last November. Abraham and Murray fought a close, competitive fight, with Abraham retaining his WBO world title via split decision. The fight was so close as a matter of fact, that Murray had thought he had won it, and even criticized the judges for the result.
For Murray (33-4-1,16 KO’s), the rematch with Abraham would have been a great opportunity for him to come back with a bang, especially coming off of a decision loss to George Groves in June. Now, according to Murray’s tweet, his team has to find another opponent for the Nov. 12 date. Chances are it will not be another big name opponent, since Nov. 12 is only three weeks from now.
As for Abraham (45-5, 30 KO’s), the fight with Murray would have been a big one for him too. Abraham is only two fights removed from his title-losing effort against Gilberto Ramirez earlier this year. If Abraham were able to beat Murray, it would have started him on the right path to regain a wold title. However, his path to another belt will be halted for now, depending on the circumstances of his withdrawal from the bout.
A fight between Abraham and Murray would have been part of a stacked card. The event is headlined by Cuban heavyweight Luis Ortiz, who will be taking on Malik Scott. Also on the card is Jason Sosa defending his WBA super featherweight title against Stephen Smith, and Jamie McDonnell defending his batamweight belt against Libiorio Solis.
