Under head coach Bill Self, Kansas basketball has dominated the Big 12.

For the past 12 seasons, Kansas has captured at least a share of the Big 12 regular season championship.

Bill Self was hired to be the Kansas Head Coach for the 2003-04 season, replacing the departing Roy Williams. Self’s first season in Lawrence, was also the last season that Kansas did not win the Big 12 regular season title.

In 13 seasons, Self’s overall record is 385-83. In Big 12 conference play, Self’s teams are 179-39. Self’s worst Big 12 season saw Kansas go 13-5, and still win the Big 12 regular season championship. In addition to winning every Big 12 title since the 2004-05 season, Kansas has seven Big 12 tournaments titles under Self. In 2008, Self led Kansas to the National Championship. Four years later, Kansas lost the title game to Kentucky.

The players have come and gone, but the Jayhawks success has continued for 12 years. There are a lot of reasons for the success. Self has done a great job recruiting and coaching players. Self has seemingly found the perfect ratio of talented one and done lottery picks, and players who stay for all four years. While critics have taken shots at Self for some early tournament exits in March. His teams are nothing but consistent. Every year, you can pencil the Jayhawks into a top three seed into the tournament bracket.

Under Self, the Jayhawks have taken advantage of the lack of competition in the Big 12. Over the past 13 seasons, the Big 12 has not had a consistent contender to compete with. Since Self was hired as the Head Coach, only Texas (12) and Oklahoma (8) have made the tournament in at least eight of the past 13 seasons. Oklahoma State, has made it seven times. Baylor, Iowa State, and Kansas State has each made the tournament on six occasions. Since Self was hired, only Texas has been consistently good. The other schools have had their ups and downs. The lack of consistency is a large reason why Kansas has won for the past 12 years.

With Kansas again the favorite to win the Big 12, the streak of regular season titles figures to continue. At 10-1, Kansas is the third behind Duke and Kentucky to win the 2017 National Championship.
