Texas cornerback Kris Boyd landed a nasty helmet-to-helmet hit on Baylor quarterback Seth Russell and was not ejected.

Targeting has been one of the tougher calls for officials to make in college football. Trying to prove intent and whether or not it was a legal hit has been a constant thorn in the side of officials. On Saturday, Texas cornerback Kris Boyd put a hit on Baylor quarterback Seth Russell that had plenty of people wondering if he would be ejected.

As Russell tried to slide and get down to avoid contact, Boyd connected helmets with him and it was a brutal hit to watch. However, Boyd was not ejected for the hit on the field and some wondered if it was the right call.

It’s a tough one to call when watching the replay. It does look like he leads with the crown of the helmet, but he doesn’t exactly launch himself either. It looks like he might have just been in a bad spot to try and avoid the hit.

Had Russell not slid at that angle, there’s a good chance that hit doesn’t happen. The refs had to have seen enough evidence to feel that the play was not worthy of an ejection in what was a great battle between both programs in Austin on Saturday.
