Manchester City maintained their place at the top of the table thanks to a 4-0 win against West Brom.

Arsenal thrashed a forlorn Sunderland 4-1 in Saturday’s early match to sit alone atop the Premier League standings, albeit briefly. Manchester City followed Arsenal’s lead by doing one better, comprehensively beating West Brom 4-0 at the Hawthorns to join the Gunners on 23 points at the summit of the table.

City, however, are technically in first place due to their superior goal difference. Both top teams disposed of their opponents away from home, making the results all the more impressive.

Sergio Aguero was in superlative form as the shifty striker was in on all three City goals. He pretty much put the fixture to bed on his own accord with two first-half goals — one of which was out of the top drawer. He then followed that up with an assist on Ilkay Gundogan’s first in the 79th minute.

Spurs were unable to beat Leicester at home to drop another two points in the standings. While they are the only undefeated team in the Premier League, Tottenham’s inability to take all three points will probably be their undoing at season’s end. A 1-1 draw with the Foxes moves Spurs a single point ahead of Chelsea and temporarily into fourth.

Chelsea have a golden opportunity to leapfrog Spurs with a victory over Southampton tomorrow. Liverpool are playing Crystal Palace now and have the chance to join City and Arsenal atop the leaderboard.

Manchester United failed to beat Burnley at home, a disastrous result for the Red Devils. United haven’t won in seven league games, so the pressure will continue to mount for Jose Mourinho and his struggling side.

Next: October is the cruelest month

Sunderland bring up the rear and don’t look like a team that will stay in the Premier League come May. David Moyes is somehow holding on to his job, but surely it won’t be long before the Sunderland’s ownership group gives the Scot his marching orders. Two points from 10 matches just isn’t good enough, especially knowing they’ll probably need 38 points from their remaining 28 games to secure their status in England’s top flight.
