Chargers at Broncos: Highlights, score and recap
By Brad Weiss
Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers will head to Denver to take on Trevor Siemian and the Broncos in an AFC West showdown on Sunday.
The Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers met up in Week 6 of the 2016 NFL season, in a Thursday Night Football matchup. San Diego were heavy underdogs at home, but were able to pull out a 21-13 victory. The win practically saved head coach Mike McCoy’s job, and they have been playing inspired football ever since.
Denver’s loss was their second in a row, after starting the season with four straight wins. However, they looked very good in a Monday Night Football drubbing of the Houston Texans this past week, and their defense looks to be back to their dominating selves. Anytime the AFC West teams get together it is sure to be a good one, and Sunday afternoon will be no different.
The AFC West is loaded this season, and some publications actually have all four teams in their top-10 rankings. Denver is tied with the Oakland Raiders at 5-2, while Kansas City is 4-2. While 3-4, the Chargers have shown the ability to play with anyone this year, and has the Denver win on their resume already this season.
Philip Rivers has played extremely well this season, and despite losing his best wide receiver in Week 1, continues to put up big numbers. Denver’s defense has not allowed a touchdown to a wide receiver since Week 1, so Rivers will need to be dialed in if he wishes to get the ball into the end zone. The Broncos secondary looked very good on Monday night, so it will be interesting to see what kind of game plan the Chargers dial up on Sunday.
Highlights
Highlights will be posted throughout the game.
Three Stars Prediction
1. Demaryius Thomas
Expect a big game from Demaryius Thomas on Sunday, as he will be facing a San Diego secondary that is known for giving up the big play. Thomas has teamed well with first-year starter Trevor Siemian, and will definitely get double-digit targets in this one. The wideout should go for over 100 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers.
2. Melvin Gordon
The Denver secondary does not allow much to wide receivers, as they have held the likes of Julio Jones and DeAndre Hopkins out of the end zone in recent weeks. Melvin Gordon has become a workhorse for San Diego, and if he can limit his fumbles, he should be in for a good day on Sunday. He is going to get a ton of touches, and if the Broncos do find the end zone, it will likely be Gordon plowing one in.
3. Devontae Booker
Denver found out this week that C.J. Anderson may be done for the year, so it will be rookie Devontae Booker’s show from here on out. Booker has looked good the past few weeks, as his workload has continued to be increased. He scored his first NFL touchdown against the Texans last week, and should add one or two to that total on Sunday.

Odds
The Denver Broncos are the favorite for the second time in this matchup this season, as the line is Denver -4. The over/under is set at 43.5, so don’t expect this one to set any scoring records on Sunday.
Next Week
The Chargers head home to take on the Tennessee Titans. Denver will take their show on the road, as they face the Oakland Raiders in a Sunday Night Football matchup.
