Chelsea, having not allowed a goal in three games, are firing on all cylinders in the Premier League. They’ve outscored their last three opponents 9-0, which includes a 4-0 drubbing of Manchester United last week.
Pedro and Eden Hazard caused United fits last week, but should face a much sterner test against a confident and stingy Southampton defense.
Southampton, thanks in large part to the always reliable center-back pairing of Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk, lay claim to the league’s second best defensive record.
Chelsea will have to play one-touch soccer, displaying creativity and incisiveness to penetrate Southampton’s unforgiving defensive crew.
Diego Costa will enjoy playing against a Southampton defense known for its robust, physical nature. It’s the kind of scenario where Costa thrives.
He’ll know he’s in a battle from the first whistle against Fonte and van Dijk. It will be interesting to see if the temperamental Spaniard can keep his cool against a typically stoic defensive duo.
Saints have allowed only two goals in their last six Premier League games, further demonstrating the team’s ability to collectively – and consistently – shutdown their opponents.
However, only one of Southampton’s six previous games have come against a team in the top half of the table, which begs the question whether they can silence more prolific offenses. They played admirably against Manchester City last week and will have another chance to silence the remaining critics against Chelsea’s ever-threatening attack.
As you’d expect, Chelsea have enjoyed more of the recent success against Saints, losing only one of their last 15 head-to-head matches. The Saints’ sole victory occurred at Stamford Bridge in October 2015.
Saints have built an impressive resume at St. Mary’s Stadium and haven’t lost in nine home games, their last defeat coming at the hands of this very same Chelsea team back in February.
