Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was stretchered off the field after taking a hit on the sideline.
Things took a scary turn in Denver on Sunday when Broncos defense coordinator Wade Philips was stretchered off the field. The coach took a hard shot from Melvin Gordon and needed immediate medical attention, which brought the game and the atmosphere to a grinding halt.
The hit occurred on a play where Phillips defense put points on the board thanks to an interception return for a touchdown. Phillips was reportedly alert and answering questions on the sideline as he was being placed onto the stretcher.
Phillips was eventually carted off the field, and seemed to be conscious, but that didn’t change how scary things were. Phillips has helped make the Broncos defense into the brute force it is, and has given a lot of credit for the team making it to and eventually winning the Super Bowl last year.
Here’s a look at the hit that forced Phillips to be stretchered away from the game:
It doesn’t look like the hit was malicious, although everyone is going to have their own opinion about the incident. Nevertheless, now isn’t the time to play the blame game or turn this into something else. All that matters now is Philips health and how quickly he will hopefully recover.
As of now, it’s unclear the extent of his injury but the scene no doubt put a damper on the game. CBS reported from the sideline that Phillips was taken to the hospital but was alert in the ambulance. Other reports from those at the game indicated that Phillips is able to move his extremities.
This scary incident has once again reminded us that football isn’t the most important thing in the world and sometimes there are bigger things to worry about that the scoreboard.
