College Football Week 9: Top performers of the week
By Brad Weiss
Week 9 of the college football season is in the books, and a few players continue to dominate individually. Here are the top five performers from Week 9.
The action did not stop this week in college football, as there were a ton of huge matchups this past weekend. In the ACC, No. 3 Clemson was given all it could handle against 12th-ranked Florida State, as they were able to hang on to their undefeated record.
Michigan State played spirited ball against No. 2 Michigan, and fourth-ranked Washington narrowly defeated No. 17 Utah in the biggest Pac-12 game of the season.
Switching to the individual performances, there were plenty of headline-grabbing performances in Week 9. After diving into all of the action, we take a look at the top-five performances of the week that was in college football.
The Memphis Tigers dropped a shootout against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane this past week, but it was not for a lack of effort by their star wide receiver. Anthony Miller caught 12 balls against Tulsa, racking up 250 yards, while scoring twice. He is having an incredible season for Memphis, and has already set his career highs in receptions (53) and yards (822).
Memphis quarterback Riley Ferguson hit Miller for his first score in the second quarter, as the two connected for a 58-yard bomb to cut the Tulsa lead to 21-14. Ferguson and Miller would then open up the scoring in the second half, as their three-yard hookup pulled the Tigers to within five points. That would be as close as they would get, as the James Flanders-led Golden Hurricane ran off the final 24 points of the game in a 59-30 win.
The 12-catch game for Miller was the second time he has gone for double-digit catches in a game this season. The junior from Memphis, Tennessee has now scored three touchdowns in the last two games, and has matched his total (five) from last season. In his last two games, Miller has caught 21 passes for 384 yards. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they lost both games.
