ESPN College Pick Em Picks Week 10

It was a rough week in ESPN College Pick Em for me in week 9. I only picked up 27 out of 55 total points. I had both Texas and Baylor in my top five, so there were 16 points that I lost right away. To top that off, the only one I got in the bottom was Washington.

I fell one spot in the Fantasy CPR reader’s group, and not by a small margin. I now sit 13 points behind fourth, and 14 points out of the top three. In all fairness, our top two (Soccergoalie6 and pitpenguins66) are both in the 99th percentile of ESPN College Pick Em players.

This week looks much easier, but as well all know, looks can be deceiving. The picks will be in order from least confident (1) to most (10) for those of you that play the confidence version of the game like I do.

(1) Navy over Notre Dame:

True, this doesn’t happen often. In fact, it has only happened once since Roger Staubach beat the Irish in 1963 (a 46-44 Middies win in South Bend in 2007). Navy has only beaten the Irish 12 times in 88 tries. So why this year? The Irish are beat up on the defensive side of the ball, and it is hard to stop an option when you aren’t used to facing one

(2) LSU over Alabama:

LSU plays well at home, especially at night. I want to pick the Tigers to win this. I really do. However, the job that the Tide did on Leonard Fournette last year is burned into my mind. This year Fournette will come in well rested after sitting out for a couple of weeks in October. He is running like a man possessed. This should be a great game, and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if LSU snaps the seven game losing streak to the Tide. In fact, I’m going to pick it anyway!

(3) Oklahoma State over Kansas State:

These two teams have had some epic battles over the past eight years or so. As has been the case in that stretch, these teams are pretty evenly matched once again. My confidence in this is low for two reasons. One, OSU is coming off a huge win over undefeated West Virginia. Hangover is always a possibility. Second, they are on the road. Manhattan is a tough place to play. I expect a close game, but I like OSU’s skill players to pull it out in the fourth quarter.

(4) Florida State over North Carolina State:

The Wolfpack have a habit of scaring better teams that come into Raleigh. If only they could get themselves up for every game in that manner. At any rate, the Seminoles are by far the more talented team, but how are the going to be mentally after handing the game to Clemson? The Wolfpack nearly poached the Tigers on the road? Can they catch the Seminoles napping in Raleigh? Just the fact that it is a decent possibility has me going lower on this.

(5) Army over Air Force:

After a hot start, the Falcons have had a rough stretch. They even struggled with Fresno last week! A win here would give Air Force the Commander In Chief Cup, but I doubt they walk in to West Point and take it. Army looked very good at Wake last week. Better than Air Force has looked since September.

(6) Florida over Arkansas:

SEC road games can be tough, but the Razorbacks will make it easier by turning the ball over. The Piggies also got trampled by Auburn last week. Florida is a pretty good running team as well, even though they can effectively throw the ball at times. This wont be as ugly as the Auburn game, and may even be close until the fourth quarter, but at some point the Gators will pull away.

(7) Baylor over TCU:

The TCU offense has been a wreck lately. The Toadies have not scored more than 24 points since Oklahoma, and we all know how bad their defense is. In that span, they needed a missed field goal on the last play to avoid being the only FBS team to lose to Kansas since 2013. TCU only scored ten in a beatdown by West Virginia. Their defense did a great job against Texas Tech, but their offense once again struggled. This may not be a high scoring game as it has been in year’s past. That will favor TCU. That said, I still don’t think they win.

(8) Ohio State over Nebraska:

The Cornhuskers played their best game of the season against Wisconsin, and it still wasn’t enough. They should be able to play well enough in Columbus to keep it close, but they lack the playmakers on defense to force Ohio State into mistakes like Penn State did. Tommy Armstrong will make a couple of critical mistakes that even the fourth quarter magic that Nebraska has displayed wont be able to overcome.

(9) Washington over California:

That Cal defense has been shredded by San Diego State, Texas, Arizona State, Oregon, and even Oregon State. Washington’s offense might be better than all five of those teams combined. This get ugly, and quick. Washington by a lot.

(10) Penn State over Iowa:

Trace McSorley has done something that Christian Hackenburg never could (beside completing half his passes): win. The Nittany Lions are playing very well right now. Iowa hasn’t played very well in over a year. This is Penn State’s highest ranking since 2009, but James Franklin has done a good job of keeping this team grounded so far.
