3. Washington State beats Washington

The College Football Playoff needs a safety net. That is a school that they can turn to if one of their top schools drops out and loses a game. Washington is that perfect safety net for the conference. At No. 5 in the country, the Huskies have a great shot of getting in if they go undefeated.

However, there is one game on their schedule that is going to be extremely difficult. The Apple Cup against Washington State on the road will be a classic. The Cougars have yet to lose a game in the conference this year and will give Washington everything they can handle.

The Pac-12 hasn’t been that great and one loss would cause the Huskies to tumble. Losing their safety net would be the worst thing for the College Football Playoff committee to deal with. That would mean every team in the top four would have no room to slip up.

The teams after Washington in the standings are really iffy outside of Ohio State. Having to depend on the teams on the outside looking in to provide the part of the new safety net would be a lot to ask and a lesser team would be getting the nod.
