The meeting will be a reunion of sorts as the two Spanish managers have a history of facing each other in the Real Madrid – Barcelona “superclasicos”. Pep Guardiola needs no introduction, and Karanka spent the better part of his career as a player and as assistant manager at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho.

Middlesbrough is built on a strong defensive back line and they have some success against the Premier League’s top teams, most recently getting a 0-0 draw away at Arsenal. Karanka’s defensive organization may be disturbed by the potential absence of defender Daniel Ayala. Middlesbrough will also be without Gaston Ramirez for this one as he picked up his fifth booking of the season in the last game against Bournemouth.
