On Saturday afternoon, an SEC matchup will take place between Mississippi State and Texas A&M. Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field in Starkville, MS will host the game.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the first College Football Playoff Rankings saw Texas A&M claim the No. 4 spot. They leapfrogged the unbeaten Washington Huskies, the 7-1 Louisville Cardinals, and the 7-1 Ohio State Buckeyes. This is despite getting blown out by Alabama just two weeks ago. However, A&M has beaten ranked or previously ranked teams like UCLA, Auburn, Arkansas, and Tennessee, which may have helped them.
The Aggies are coming off a 52-10 beat down of New Mexico State. This never really was close, as NMS couldn’t score a touchdown until the fourth quarter. A&M even brought in their backup quarterback to throw 10 passes and had eight different players have a carry. With the way how Mississippi State has played through eight games, another blowout may be in store.
After losing quarterback Dak Prescott to the NFL Draft, the Bulldogs have fallen off the map in the SEC. Their only conference win came against the lowly South Carolina Gamecocks. The other two were over Massachusetts and Samford. While Dan Mullen’s team has mostly played tough competition in their losses, their season’s tone got set when they lost to South Alabama in Week 1.
To compete with Texas A&M, quarterback Nick Fitzgerald may need to replicate the 500-plus yards of offense he had against Samford. Maybe not that amount, but he’ll need one of his best performances of the season.
