CHAMPAIGN, IL - OCTOBER 3: Sam Foltz

Sam Foltz’s legacy continues to live on among Nebraska’s opponents, as Ohio State students decided to form an image showing the former punter’s number.

No. 6 Ohio State is in the midst of a serious Big Ten matchup against No. 10 Nebraska. The Buckeyes stormed out to a 14-3 lead over the Cornhuskers in the first quarter. Despite the competitive nature between these two teams, the fans still respect one another.

The Buckeyes’ student section demonstrated a classy gesture by forming an image honoring deceased punter Sam Foltz. The number 27 can be seen in this well-thought out image formed by the Buckeyes student section.

Foltz was killed in a car crash with former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler last summer. The two punters were on their way back from a kicking camp held in Wisconsin. LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye accompanied Foltz and Sadler, but he was fortunate enough to survive the crash. He suffered leg burns and required stitches at the hospital, but he has since recovered from the incident.

Opposing teams have since gone out of their way to pay respect to Foltz. Examples of this include the Cornhuskers taking a delay of game penalty. They did this by not sending out a punter during their first punt drive against Fresno State.

Foltz has often been described as a model student-athlete, and his willingness to help children learn how to kick demonstrates that. Foltz and Sadler were both traveling to Wisconsin to serve as student instructors at a kicking camp.

The death of a college football player has helped prove that sportsmanship is alive and well. It remains to be seen what other Nebraska opponents will do to pay respect to the Cornhuskers’ fallen punter.
