The Detroit Lions go into brand-new US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and shock the rival Minnesota Vikings in overtime, 22-16. Detroit improves to 5-4 on the season. The Vikings stumble to 5-3 after starting the year a perfect 5-0.
Detroit lead Minnesota late 13-9, but surrendered a Rhett Ellison rushing touchdown inside of one minute. Down 16-13, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford got enough yards on the final drive of regulation to set up a Matt Prater game-tying field goal attempt.
With ice in his veins, Prater would boot a fantastic 58-yard game-tying field goal to force overtime. Detroit would win the coin toss and elected to receive. The Lions would push the ball down the field. Stafford would connect with wide receiver Golden Tate who slipped a sideline tackle to score the game-winning touchdown.
Detroit is a never-say-die football team this year. Stafford is playing great ball in late fourth quarter drives. It hasn’t been easy, but the Lions are winning close games every week. Interestingly, all nine of Detroit’s games have been decided by seven points or less.
They may not be the most talented team in the NFC, but the Lions are very much a Wild Card contender. Minnesota is falling apart at the seams. Panic is in the air in the Twin Cities after this brutal home loss to the rival Lions.
Three Stars
- Golden Tate: Tate was Stafford’s favorite target on Sunday afternoon. He had 11 catches for 79 yards and the game-winning 28-yard touchdown in overtime to beat the Vikings.
- Matt Prater: Prater had an outstanding day as the Lions kicker. He had 10 of the Lions’ 22 points on Sunday, going 3-3 on field goals. With ice in his veins, he drained a 58-yarder to force overtime.
- Sam Bradford: Bradford battled in this game and played well enough to lead the Vikings to victory. He completed 31 of 40 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown.
