Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered review – Making Call of Duty great again

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the greatest first-person shooters of all-time. With the latest remaster, we experience it all over again.

For two straight years, Call of Duty  has released games that are full of jetpacks and people flying everywhere. This year, the series returns to that same style with Infinite Warfare. Unfortunately (well, not really), we aren’t talking about that game. Let it be known that we have had a lot of fun with Infinite Warfare, though. A review for that game will be coming soon.

Along with Infinite Warfare comes a remaster of one of the best games in the series, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Back in 2007, Modern Warfare was released and it not only revolutionized the series, but it brought the first-person shooter genre to the next level.

Prior to this, there were other popular first-person shooters, such as Halo and Counter-Strike. The other three Call of Duty games were also fun to play for many people. The single-player modes all told an interesting story and offered that war-like gameplay. The online multiplayer was also enjoyable, but it was definitely bland. That’s where Modern Warfare comes in.

Modern Warfare returned to form with the amazing single-player mode. It has an amazing story along with incredible gameplay. However, the highlight is, by far, the online multiplayer. This game introduced a whole new way to play Call of Duty.

There’s a variety of guns to choose from, such as Assault Rifles and Submachine Guns. Some of these include the M16A4 and the MP5, which are some of the most used weapons in the game. To along with these guns are a bunch of perks and attachments.

Some perks include Dead Silence, which quiet down your footsteps while running. There’s also Juggernaut, which increases your health and makes you harder to kill. The attachments vary and cater to the kind of player you are.

If you want to be precise with your shooting, you can attach a Red Dot Sight to your gun, making it easier to hit your target. If you want to sneak around and not be detected on the enemies radar when you shoot, then a Silencer is the way to go.

The customization options were also a new feature to the game. There’s a ton of Camo’s (skins) to add to your guns. The game had a great system of unlocking these skins as you play, which felt very rewarding.

Finally, the multiplayer maps. Till this day, these maps are some of the most memorable maps in Call of Duty history. From the small and action-packed Shipment, to the big and Sniper-based Overgrown, the maps are fantastic.

It’s insane that we’re still praising a game over 10 years later. That should definitely say something about how well it holds up. You know what the best part is? The remastered version is almost an exact replica of the original game. We’ve basically explained everything we loved about the original Modern Warfare above. Most of that has been integrated into the remaster as well. There are some gripes we have with the game, though.

For example, the bullet registration. Now, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing since all your bullets land more often. But, the M16 is way too overpowered. In the original version, it was still the best gun in the game, but it didn’t kill people in one burst the way it does now. It’s very tedious playing a game and everyone is using the same gun.

That seems to be a trend with the most recent Call of Duty games. One gun is superior compared to the rest, so everyone uses that one gun. But, the difference is in other games, it’s manageable. In this one, it’s extremely frustrating. They should definitely nerf the M16.

Another negative, and our last one at that, is the way the game was distributed. Infinity Ward didn’t really market this game the way they should have. In reality, it’s a smart move by them.

The developers bundled up both Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered into one disc. This wouldn’t be a bad thing if it was just an option and you can buy each game separately. But, that’s not the case.

In order to play Modern Warfare Remastered, you have to buy Infinite Warfare. This definitely turned off many fans. Maybe some people just wanted the remastered game and didn’t care much for Infinite Warfare. But, the company knows this and if they did sell it separately, then Infinite Warfare wouldn’t sell. That’s the truth.

Again, we aren’t implying that we don’t enjoy Infinite Warfare, because we do. But, we can almost guarantee that more people are playing Modern Warfare Remastered.

You can look at it two ways: a positive way, or a negative way. The positive way would be you purchasing the bundle for $80 and getting two games. In all honesty, that’s a steal. But, the negative way is you purchasing it for the same price and only wanting to play one game. That’s how many people feel.

Pushing all of the bad aside, let’s be real. Both of these games are fun and we have options. You can play Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered, which are both unique in their own way.

Despite some very, very slight issues, Modern Warfare Remastered is fantastic. At this point, we would have paid $80 just for this game alone. In all seriousness, it’s just as good as you remember. The best part? It looks even better.

The graphics are visually stunning and everything about the game is much smoother. Raven Software has truly outdone themselves with this remaster. Not only can long time fans revisit this amazing game, but even a new generation of gamers can see where it all started.
