3. Edwin Encarnacion, 1B/DH

The Blue Jays simply cannot afford to lose both of their marquee free agents. Encarnacion is on record as stating that he wants to remain a Blue Jay, and he appears to be the team’s first priority. The Jays have not given out a major contract to keep one of their own since Vernon Wells, and that contract turned out to be an unmitigated disaster.

The major sticking point to consider with Encarnacion is his age and the number of years he is seeking. Encarnacion is entering his age-34 season, but is seeking a five-year contract. His strikeout total spiked dramatically in 2016, which may not bode well for the twilight of his career.

Toronto has the money to pay Encarnacion, but will they take the plunge on a fifth year?
