Villanova shocked the country when it made a deep run in March last season, coming away with the national title. National pundits picked against the Wildcats all NCAA Tournament long, but they proved everyone wrong and won the National Championship against North Carolina with a buzzer-beating three-pointer.
It was one of the wildest finishes in college basketball history and they have opened the season as the No. 4 team in the land. There are some key players missing from last year’s title team, but overall, the Wildcats are elite.
Keep an eye on Jalen Brunson who might just have a breakout season. He had 17 points and seven rebounds in Villanova’s first game against Lafayette.
Purdue didn’t have the same luck at the end of its 2015-16 season. In fact, the Boilermakers suffered a devastating upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to 12th-seeded Little Rock in double overtime. The Boilermakers are looking to put that behind them, and did just that with a blowout win over McNeese in the first game of the season.
The departure of A.J. Hammons is going to be tough to deal with, but Caleb Swanigan, Isaac Haas and Vince Edwards are three returning leaders of the team.
Swanigan might end up being a first-team All-Big Ten selection this year and he got the season off with a bang. He finished with 23 points and 20 rebounds against McNeese.
