Ohio State made one of the biggest jumps of any team in the country last week as the Buckeyes went from No. 5 in the playoff ranks all the way up to No. 2 thanks to three losses ahead of them. Will they be able to hold on to that ranking and avoid a major upset Saturday?
J.T. Barrett was a serious Heisman contender not too long ago, but a few rough games essentially eliminated him from contention. He’s still having a great year, passing for 2,218 yards and 23 touchdowns with only four interceptions.
Barrett has also rushed for 617 yards and eight more scores. Mike Weber, a redshirt freshman, leads the team in rushing while Curtis Samuel might be the most dynamic player the Buckeyes have on offense.
The Spartans have always seemed to play Ohio State tough, especially since Urban Meyer has been in town. The last time Michigan State was this big of an underdog was in 1998 when Michigan State went into Columbus and upset the No. 1 Buckeyes. Can it happen again?
Despite being 3-7 and having the most disappointing season under Mark Dantonio’s reign, the Spartans have a ton of talent — and it’s young. The quarterback play has been mediocre, but the future is bright with freshman Brian Lewerke who broke his leg a few weeks ago.
Donnie Corley has been a bright spot as well. The freshman receiver is second on the team with 397 yards and three touchdowns on 27 catches and has major big-play ability. Keep an eye on LJ Scott in the run game as he has 775 yards and five touchdowns and could break out.
