No one should have overlooked the Utah Utes entering the 2016 season, but there they were, unranked and under-appreciated. Now, they’re the 12th-best team in the playoff rankings and if they win out and come out victorious in the Pac-12 title, they could make the top-four.
Anything is possible, but the Utes are going to have to hope that Troy Williams plays his best football of the season in this final stretch. The Washington-transfer has been solid in his first year with the Utes, passing for 2,184 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The run game will also be important as the Utes average over 200 yards per game on the ground. Joe Williams leads the way with 939 yards and eight touchdowns on 7.0 yards per touch while Armand Shyne and Zack Moss each have over 300.
On the contrary, Oregon has had a nightmare of a season. The Ducks came in ranked, but have gone just 3-7 through 10 games and look like the biggest disappointment in the conference and one of the most egregious flops in college football.
The Ducks moved on from JUCO transfer Dakota Prukop relatively quickly and now freshman Justin Herbert has taken over under center. He has passed for 1,432 yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions. The quarterback battle will be interesting in 2017.
Royce Freeman, a former Heisman candidate, had a rough four-game stretch in which he accumulated just 136 yards and a touchdown on 53 carries. He rebounded last week with 20 carries for 111 yards and a score. Is he on his way back to dominance?
