Stock Down: Seth Russell, QB, Baylor

Baylor starting quarterback Seth Russell was carted off the field last weekend after suffering a devastating leg injury against Oklahoma. He underwent surgery on a fractured left ankle, ending the senior’s career at Baylor.

Russell’s collegiate career ends with him throwing the third most touchdowns in the program’s history. Only Robert Griffin III and Bryce Petty found the end zone more than Russell during their time at Baylor.

Prior to the season-ending ankle injury, Russell was projected to be a late-round draft pick. NFL teams have recognized the lack of readiness among Big 12 quarterbacks, ranging from Geno Smith, Bryce Petty, and Ryan Tannehill. Looking at the schemes Russell ran in college and the added injury history, a majority of NFL teams will pass on the former Baylor Bear.

Similar to Petty coming out of Baylor, Russell is unfamiliar with calling plays, reading defenses, or running a pro-style offense. If an NFL team were to draft Russell in the late-rounds or sign him as an undrafted free agent, he would most-likely not play his rookie season.

The most likely scenario is Russell spending time on multiple practice squads in 2017 or being a healthy scratch all season as a team’s number three quarterback.
