The No. 3 Indiana Hoosiers were stunned on Tuesday night by an unlikely foe in Fort Wayne
Early on this college basketball season, one thing that we were all sure of was that the Indiana Hoosiers were one of the most prolific teams in the country. With their explosive offense and their 3-0 record, Indiana came in at No. 3 in the latest college basketball AP Poll on Monday.
With a trip to Fort Wayne on Tuesday, they had an easy road to a 4-0 record to secure that No. 3 ranking in the poll. The Mastodons of the Summit League surely wouldn’t provide a legitimate threat to the Hoosiers, who look like legitimate national title contenders here early in the 2016-17 season.
Boy, was the college basketball world told a different story on Tuesday night and now the Hoosiers may have a little soul-searching to do.
Tom Crean and his Hoosiers team were upset on the road Tuesday night by the Mastodons, 71-68, in overtime. Indiana had to fight back in the second half, which they were able to do to ultimately tie the game. Down the stretch in the overtime period, though, they just could not hold off the valiant effort of this Fort Wayne squad.
This was the first-ever win by Fort Wayne over an AP ranked team.
In the upset, the Mastodons were led by Bryson Scott, who turned in one of the better individual performances that we have seen all season. The junior guard dropped in 18 points and tallied 12 rebounds with three assists. As a team, Fort Wayne shot a little over 41 percent from the field.

Really, though, the story here on Tuesday night was the disappearing act of the Indiana offense. Through the first couple weeks of the season, Indiana was one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, scoring over 100 points twice in their first three games, including dropping 103 in their opening win against Kansas. Tuesday night, 68 was all they could muster against this Fort Wayne defense. Turning the ball over 14 times didn’t help matters either.
Tuesday night we were treated to one of the biggest upsets that we will see in college basketball all season, so it’ll be interesting to see where the Hoosiers go from here.
