After narrowly escaping the grasp of Georgia State last week at home, the Purdue Boilermakers looked like they had a lot of work left to do. Matt Painter has a talented team, but the leadership might be lacking with the departure of A.J. Hammons.
As part of the Cancun Challenge this week, the Boilermakers will have an opportunity to take on either Auburn or Texas Tech in the title game which will take place on Wednesday. They will need to play more like they did against Villanova a couple games ago than they did against the Panthers.
Caleb Swanigan is the team’s top performer when it comes to rebounding and scoring. He has taken care of the post play with Hammons gone. The sophomore is averaging 20.7 points and 13 rebounds per game, shooting over 50 percent from the field.
Utah State is no cupcake, though. The Aggies are 3-0 on the season, albeit the wins are against UCI, NJIT and Idaho State. Two of those victories were in blowout fashion while NJIT provided the toughest test, coming within nine of the Aggies.
The Aggies are looking to put together their first NCAA Tournament season since 2011 and maybe even make a run at their first Sweet 16 since 1970. They are averaging 83.3 points per game and 18.7 assists, so they are definitely potent offensively.
Leading the way is senior forward Jalen Moore who’s averaging a team-high 18 points per game and it shooting about 42 percent from long range. Keep an eye on freshman guard Koby McEwen who is averaging 15 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 54 percent from three-point land.
