No. 3: 456 passing yards, 3 TD vs. Alabama (2014)

Player: Auburn QB Nick Marshall

Final Score: 55 Alabama, 44 Auburn

Head Coaches: Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn

W-L Record in 2014: 12-2 (Alabama), 8-5 (Auburn)

Nick Marshall would confide in one of his favorite targets of the evening in Sammie Coates. Of Marshall’s 456 passing yards, Coates reeled in 206. However, it was a lowkey effort, given that Alabama outscored Auburn in the second half, 34-18.

Individually, Marshall conserved his best game of 2014 for Alabama. Previously, he acted more as a running back than a QB, scoring 11 rushing touchdowns before facing Alabama in Week 12. Regardless of his role, Marshall would finish that season with a 151.1 rating, over 2,500 passing yards and over 700 rushing yards.

The winner of Iron Bowl had a tradition of attending the BCS National Championship Game. Of the BCS’s last five years, either Alabama or Auburn were participants in the final game of the college football season:

2009 – Alabama defeated Texas

2010 –  Auburn defeated Oregon

2011 – Alabama defeated LSU

2012 – Alabama defeated Notre Dame

2013 – Auburn lost to Florida State

This year’s Iron Bowl will likely have the same implications, as Alabama is virtually unstoppable. Auburn has also suffered some casualties of their own, losing QB Sean White and RB Kamryn Pettway to injuries.
