The moment many suspected was coming for Charlie Strong will apparently arrive on Saturday morning, but will Texas land the man it wants to replace him?

When you arrive at Texas with the hopes of the Longhorns faithful behind you but you fail to even get to .500 after three seasons, you’re not long for the head football coach job. Charlie Strong undoubtedly understands this.

Many football pundits and fans expected that Strong’s fate was sealed, and that was before the Longhorns put up ended their season with a 31-9 stinker of a home loss to TCU. If there was any hope for Strong, that performance likely stomped a mudhole in it.

Thus, it’s not surprising to see reports coming from sources claiming that Strong will meet with UT officials on Saturday, and that he’ll be relieved of his duties at that meeting:

The big question will be whether Texas can get the man it seems to have already set its heart on snagging as a replacement. That would be Tom Herman, the Houston coach who has become the hottest of hit coaching commodities.

The problem is that Herman is supposedly in play for LSU as well. There’s only one of him to go around. There’s more than one desperate big time football school looking to improve its fortunes. It should be an interesting 24-48 hours while this all plays out.

As for Strong, he’ll leave Texas somewhat humbled by three straight losing seasons after going 37-15 in four campaigns at Louisville. Sometimes even the trendiest coaching candidate just isn’t the right fit at a given school. For the Longhorns, now going through the same hand-wringing they did just three years ago, they have to be hoping they get the fit right this time.
