Houston Cougars quarterback Kyle Allen plans to transfer to the University of Texas to join his head coach Tom Herman in Austin in 2017.

With former Houston Cougars head coach Tom Herman fill the head coaching vacancy with the Texas Longhorns, it doesn’t come as a surprise that some of his former players will leave Houston to join him in Austin.

Cougars quarterback Kyle Allen, who redshirted 2016, plans to graduate from the University of Houston and join Herman in Austin with two years of eligibility left, according to Alex Dunlap.

Allen was a former No. 1 high school recruit in Arizona before committing to the Texas A&M Aggies. Allen started as a freshman and sophomore before losing his job to Kyler Murray. He transferred from College Station before the 2016 season to play for Herman at Houston.

Allen’s transfer to Houston was odd, as the Cougars didn’t play in a Power 5 conference and that Herman was eventually going to leave for a lucrative Power 5 job. Being that Allen will graduate, he can transfer to any school and will be eligible right away.

How does this impact the Longhorns?

Well, Texas already has a starting quarterback in true freshman Shane Buechele, who showed promise in Sterlin Gilbert’s offense. The Allen and Buechele quarterback battle will be one of the more fascinating quarterback competitions in college football.

This could potentially mean that Buechele could end up being the one who transfers. He has three more years of eligibility remaining. Though he would be the incumbent in Austin, Herman may favor starting Allen over him. Being that Buechele is only a true freshman and has a redshirt to use, he would have to sit out a year like Allen, but would still have three years to play if he decides to transfer.
