Ed Orgeron has agreed to be the new head coach at LSU after guiding the team to a 5-2 record as the interim head coach.

LSU has found their next head coach and it’s the man who led the Tigers to a 5-2 record as the interim head coach following the early season termination of Les Miles. According to Ross Dellenger of the Advocate, LSU is hiring Ed Orgeron as the team’s head coach. The report has since been confirmed by ESPN’s Brett McMurphy and FootballScoop.com.

Orgeron gets his dream job and the LSU fan base keeps the guy they wanted after seeing how the team responded to his personality.

Reports circulated on Thanksgiving that said Houston head coach Tom Herman was close to a deal to become the next head coach at LSU, but now it looks like that could have been a ploy to force the hand of Texas into firing Charlie Strong and driving up his price so the Longhorns could hire Herman.

In any event, LSU got a coach who won over the locker room after he moved over from defensive line coach to the interim head coach after Miles was fired after a last-second loss to Auburn. He played Alabama tougher than any team has this year, albeit in a losing effort and was one yard short of beating SEC East champion Florida.

This is the first head coaching job for Orgeron since he was the head coach at Ole Miss where he compiled a 10-25 record in three seasons. Orgeron also served as the interim head coach at USC after Lane Kiffin was fired and led the Trojans to a 6-2 record. He was passed over for that job, but he could potentially reunite with Kiffin if he’s able to lure him away from Alabama with a significant raise to be LSU’s offensive coordinator.

Kiffin may elect to stay in Alabama and wait for a head coaching opportunity. However, the hire of Orgeron’s offensive coordinator is vital for Orgeron to have success. The downfall for Miles at LSU was the lack of creativity and innovation on offense and an inability to develop quarterbacks.

While the offensive coordinator is vital, Orgeron’s hire bodes well for retaining defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.

LSU will have a press conference at noon to announce the hiring.
