There’s quite the battle in the Lone Star State as the last-place San Diego Chargers are expected to defeat the AFC South-leading Houston Texans.

When last we saw the San Diego Chargers, quarterback Philip Rivers was throwing four interceptions in the fourth quarter of a tough 31-24 setback to the Miami Dolphins.

That was two weeks ago. Now Mike McCoy’s team heads east a bit to clash with the first-place Houston Texans. The defending AFC South champions and division frontrunners played well in Mexico City on Monday night. But the results were a 27-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Now Brock Osweiler, Lamar Miller, and company look to remain perfect at home this season. But it won’t be easy against a club that’s been a little snake-bitten. But these Bolts are a dangerous bunch.

Three Stars

1. Melvin Gordon

It’s been a great bounce back season for one of the league’s more disappointing rookies of 2015. Gordon has totaled an impressive 1,184 yard from scrimmage and scored 11 touchdowns in 10 contests this season. That’s a big improvement from his rookie totals when he managed only 833 yards from scrimmage and failed to find the end zone in 14 contests a year ago. The young running back ranks fourth in the league with 838 yards rushing.

2. Lamar Miller

The Texans brought in Miller this offseason to be the team’s workhorse. And the one-time Miami Dolphins running back has lived up to billing. Only four players in the league have totaled more rushing yards (824) than the five-year pro. He ran for 104 yards and a score in Monday night’s loss to the Oakland Raiders. After not reaching the end zone in the team’s first five games this season, Miller has scored four total touchdowns in Houston’s last five contests.

3. Brock Osweiler

The high-priced free-agent pickup has been a disappointment to date. Osweiler has thrown just 12 touchdown passes to 10 interceptions. He’s also completing just 59.5 percent of his throws and has turned over the ball at least once in nine of his 10 outings this year. But on Sunday, he will be taking aim at the league’s 28th-ranked pass defense in the league. Can he take advantage of this San Diego shortcoming?

Odds

The line has flipped on this matchup. While the Houston Texans opened as a 1-point home favorite earlier in the week, Bill O’Brien’s club is now a home underdog to the San Diego Chargers. And the OVER/UNDER for this contest has also taken a dip from 47.5 to 46.

Next Week

The Bolts return to San Diego and play hosts to the improving Tampa Bay Buccaneers. O’Brien’s Texans head north to Lambeau Field for the first time since 2008 to take on the Green Bay Packers.
