Malik Zaire will be transferring from Notre Dame for next season, but of course, the move comes with some restrictions
It was first reported on Tuesday night that Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire would be transferring from the program. He would be meeting with head coach Brian Kelly on Wednesday where he would be granted his release, and according to what he said to ESPN, that will indeed be the case.
However, there are some restrictions.
Zaire did confirm that he will be leaving the program as a graduate transfer, meaning that he can head to (almost) any FBS program that he wants. However, he was also told that he is blocked from heading to most of the Irish’s 2017 opponents, with the exclusion being the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Here is a list of schools that Zaire cannot transfer to:
- Temple
- Georgia
- Boston College
- Michigan State
- Miami (OH)
- USC
- NC State
- Wake Forest
- Miami (FL)
- Navy
- Stanford
Of course, while some people may be a bit upset about this, the fact of the matter is that it’s commonplace for a school to place restrictions such as these. We see it all the time when a coach from a Power-5 conference restricts a graduate player from moving to another program in the conference.

That said, the glaring inclusion on this list here is the Michigan State Spartans. In the original report on Tuesday that Zaire would be leaving, it was specifically stated that East Lansing was one of the possible destinations. Well, after meeting with the school on Wednesday, it appears that is out the window.
Still, though, even with the restrictions placed there are still plenty of FBS schools out there who could use the services of the former top recruit. Within the next few weeks, we should know who that school will be.
