On Saturday night, the No. 14 Louisville Cardinals will head out to Phoenix, AZ to play the Grand Canyon Antelopes. It’s an interesting game for Louisville to travel for since lower level schools like Grand Canyon usually are the visiting teams in high-profile contests.
Louisville has nearly been perfect to start the 2016 college basketball season. They crushed most of their first five opponents of the season, including a 91-58 route of William & Mary. However, No. 20 Baylor would knock the Cardinals off, 66-63 to give them their first loss of the season.
This down note would lead into another tough game against No. 15 Purdue. Despite having just two players score more than 10 points, Rick Pitino’s team still found enough offense to pull off the win, 71-64. They shot 48.3-percent from the field, including 11 points and rebounds from Mangok Mathiang.
Overall, Louisville has been led by guard Donovan Mitchell. He has averaged 12.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game. This is despite shooting just 38-percent from the field.
Grand Canyon has started their season 3-3. This includes wins over Albany, Marist, and Coppin State. If they stand any chance of pulling off the upset, they still continue to need elite production from star guard DeWayne Russell. He’s averaging 24.3 points per game on 50-percent shooting from the field. He’s had a 15 point uptick in scoring production after putting up just 9.7 points per game in 2015-16.
