Could the Los Angeles Dodgers be close to a blockbuster deal for Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen?

The Los Angeles Dodgers are looking to improve their team to win a World Series. Naturally, the big budget team is interested in virtually any good player. Thanks to a nearly infinite budget and one of the best farm systems in baseball, the Dodgers can get anyone they want. According to Jon Morosi, Los Angeles has shown interest in Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen.

A trade for the former National League Most Valuable Player could be quite difficult. For one thing, the Dodgers already have a surplus of outfielders. At least one of them would likely have to be in the deal for it to make sense for Los Angeles. Secondly, it would likely cost them a fortune. However, even if the Dodgers don’t want to include top prospect Julio Urias, they probably have a deep enough farm system to pull it off. There’s also allegedly a mystery team involved.

One possibility is Los Angeles could offer the Pirates Yasiel Puig. While the Cuban outfielder did very well after a stint in the minor leagues, he is probably the most valuable of all the outfielders the Dodgers want to trade. Conveniently, his contract is very team friendly, something the Pirates might be interested in. It would take more than just Puig for Pittsburgh to accept the deal, but he is a clear candidate to be in the trade.

The Dodgers would be banking on McCutchen’s 2016 season being a fluke rather than a sign of things to come. However, judging by his history, Los Angeles should be willing to pull the trigger on a deal. Even if they can’t move an outfielder in the trade, there are enough teams who might value someone like Puig that they could easily trade him in a separate deal.
