Has former WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James been offered a contract to return to the company?

The WWE Women’s division is better than it’s ever been, and it could be getting even better if recent rumors involving Mickie James are to be believed.

According to Pro Wrestling Sheet, five-time WWE Women’s Champion and one-time Divas Champion Mickie James was recently offered a contract to return to WWE following her NXT Takeover: Toronto appearance last month where she squared off with NXT Women’s Champion Asuka in a fantastic match.

"“Multiple sources with direct knowledge tell us James has kept in contact with WWE officials since NXT TakeOver: Toronto and they’ve let her know a deal is waiting for her should she want to accept.”"

Mickie James hasn’t been a part of the full-time WWE roster in more than six years. Before her appearance in Toronto, she was last seen on WWE programming on the April 23, 2010 episode of Smackdown when she and Beth Phoenix were defeated by Layla and Michelle McCool in tag team action. She was let go due to the company wanting to take the women’s division in a different direction.

Following her release, Mickie James used her star power to land successful deals in AAA and also spent a few years in TNA, winning the Knockouts Championship on three occasions. She also released a couple of country albums and opened shows for the likes of Montgomery Gentry and Rascal Flatts.

After another short run in TNA in 2015 and a brief run in Global Force Wrestling, Mickie was contacted to fill in for her former rival, Trish Stratus, who was the original choice to take on Asuka but had to back out due to her being pregnant with her second child. Ironically, it was James’ rivalry with Stratus that catapulted her into superstardom. Coming into WWE as Stratus’ biggest fan, Mickie eventually turned on Trish and defeated the Hall of Famer at WrestleMania 22 to win her first WWE Women’s Championship. She would go on to win that title on four more occasions and also held the Divas Championship one time.
