Arizona State Sun Devils head coach Bobby Hurley ripped into his team after they got blown out by Purdue on Tuesday night in New York City.

When the Arizona State Sun Devils brought head coach Bobby Hurley into the fold, they knew they were going to get a coach that held his players to high standards. Thus far to begin the season, the Sun Devils have had some ups and downs on the basketball floor. After getting rolled by Kentucky last week, they spent this week getting rolled over by Purdue.

After the 97-64 loss to Purdue on Tuesday night, Hurley had enough of his team’s performance and sounded off on them in his press conference. He spoke to their effort and how this game was benefiting cancer research as part of the Jimmy V. Classic.

Hurley pulled no punches about the importance of the event and how his team performed.

“For a city that’s a blue-collar city and an arena that has so much tradition and so many good players that have played on this court — to look like that, it was embarrassing. And then the cause, such a great cause that we’re playing for tonight. Did my players play as hard as the people that are going through what they go through in cancer, as families go through in their personal situations? I don’t think so.”

The Sun Devils have played out of the country and across the country over the last two weeks and they have come with nothing positive to show for it. While they’ve played great opponents, getting blown out is nothing they can build off of.

Hurley has been around great basketball his entire playing and coaching career and knows what it takes to be successful. He isn’t getting that out of his team currently and that’s the reason he’s so upset with the way they have played against Purdue and others.

With the Sun Devils hoping to take another step this year, they’re going to have to show improvement quick as a team. There are a lot of good teams in the Pac-12 and things won’t get any easier for them.
