The New York Yankees are set to retire the No. 2 Derek Jeter jersey on May 14, 2017.

On Tuesday, the New York Yankees announced that they will be retiring the No. 2 jersey for their iconic shortstop known as Derek Jeter. And it’s a special event, as his jersey will be the final single-digit jersey to be retired by the organization.

The ceremony will take place on Mother’s Day (May 14, 2017), as they will be playing against the Houston Astros. He will also be honored with a plaque to be unveiled in Monument Park.

Jeter will become the 22nd Yankee to have his jersey retired, and will join some elite company. Here. is the single-digit jerseys that have been retired by the Yankees.

  • No. 1 – Billy Martin, 1986
  • No. 3 – Babe Ruth, 1948
  • No. 4 – Lou Gehrig, 1939
  • No. 5 – Joe DiMaggio, 1952
  • No. 6 – Joe Torre, 2014
  • No. 7 – Mickey Mantle, 1969
  • No. 8 – Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey, 1972
  • No. 9 – Roger Maris, 1984
  • No. 10 – Phil Rizzuto, 1985

Nobody in the history of the team has worn the No. 0 jersey before, so now every jersey from 1-10 will have been retired. In fact, the lowest current jersey number, 11, is held by Brett Gardner.

His jersey retirement follows that of Mariano Rivera’s No. 42. Rivera was the final player to wear the number, after it had been retired by MLB in honor of Jackie Robinson.

Jeter was the Yankees’ first-round pick in 1992, selected sixth overall, and was a part of five World Series championship teams (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009). He was a 14-time All-Star and is the franchise leader in multiple offensive categories including hits, stolen bases, and at-bats. He will be Hall of Fame eligible in 2020.
