The Carolina Panthers handle the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, Dec. 11, winning 28-16 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Carolina improves to 5-8 on the year, while San Diego stumbles to 5-8 on the season.

In a battle between two desperate teams, the Carolina Panthers were able to outplay the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, 28-16. This win keeps the Panthers alive in the NFC Playoffs race for another week. San Diego’s eighth defeat of the season has the Chargers pretty much eliminated from playoff contention in the AFC.

Carolina dominated most of this game, taking a 23-7 lead into halftime. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was a turnover machine with three interceptions and two lost fumbles. Carolina would capitalize on Rivers’ careless with the football to win this one fairly easily.

San Diego would threaten at times in the second half with a Rivers touchdown pass and a Trovon Reed interception. Reed nearly pick-sixed Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, but the initial 100-yard return was overturned for a three-yarder.

Rivers would be sacked for a safety on the ensuing possession and that would pretty much give the Panthers the breathing room they needed to win the ball game. San Diego stays alive for another week, as the Denver Broncos lost to the Tennessee Titans. Carolina does the same in the NFC with this big win for the Panthers.

Three Stars

  1. Daryl Worley: Worley was outstanding in the great all-around performance by the Panthers defense. He had 10 tackles, eight solo, and an interception return for 22 yards.
  2. Kurt Coleman: Coleman was stellar for the Panthers defense. He had eight tackles, four solo, and an interception. Coleman had three pass breakups on the game.
  3. Shaq Thompson: Thompson was great up the middle for the Panthers defense. He had seven tackles, three solo, and an interception return for 12 yards.
