4. Human eye over a formula

A complaint from the BCS system had been that computers were deciding via a formula who were the top two teams in college football. This set up the National Championship game and made for plenty of debate. Did the computers pick the two best teams? Are they really picking the two best teams? How can we understand this system?

Well, with the College Football Playoff committee, these questions still apply. However, instead of computers picking, it’s humans making the selections for how the top 25 looks.

While having actual people put together the rankings still has its flaws (we don’t know of a concrete system that they use), it still provides us with people who are actually watching the games to determine the top 25. This is instead of having machines, who obviously can’t watch the games, punching in a formula to determine the results. It could give the fans more confidence that the human eye is making the decisions, which they may feel relates to them more and how they’re viewing the weekly games.
