Ranking the top 50 college football programs of all time
Another program that happens to be an Independent is Army. The Black Knights have an ominous 666 wins in their history and have won three claimed national titles and two unclaimed crowns. Believe it or not, but West Point has been home to some good football over the past century.
In fact, the Black Knights have won two more national titles, five, than they have bowl games, three, in their existence as a football program. That might not seem like the best stat, but in the 1940s and 1950s, they were the team to beat.
Head coach Earl Blaik led the program to three straight national titles from 1944-46, going 27-0-1 during that span. Not only were the Army teams good, but there were some individual players who stood out during that time. Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis won the Heisman Trophy during the final two national title years and Pete Dawkins won 12 years later.

You don’t normally think of a military school as being one of the top football programs of all time, but Navy was already named and now Army (five national titles, three Heisman winners).
Army is heading to its first bowl game since 2010 this season and second since the 1996 season.
Fun fact: former president Dwight D. Eisenhower played on the 1912 Army Black Knights team.
