Craig Sager passed away Thursday after a battle with leukemia. Twitter tributes flooded in following the news.
After a two year battle with leukemia, Turner Sports TV reporter Craig Sager died on Thursday at the age of 65.
Sager was best known for his work as a sideline reporter during NBA broadcasts on the TNT network. As has become customary in the NBA, Sager did in-game interviews with coaches, but what made his appearances special were the unique outfits he chose to wear.
His wardrobe drew him both fans and critics alike, but it made Sager the most recognizable NBA reporter on television.
But regardless of how one felt about his wardrobe, the NBA and entire sports community united behind Sager in 2014 when he was diagnosed with leukemia. He missed the entire 2014-15 season to undergo treatment, but when he returned to the sidelines, social media made him a star with hashtags such as #SagerStrong.
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was even “happy,” which is a rare occurrence as all basketball fans know.
“Over the last two years, I’ve done everything in my power to live my life as normally as possible. But at times, you need support and I’m so thankful to everyone who has been there for me,” Sager said in May.
This past July, Sager received the Jimmy V Award at the ESPYs, which is given to a person who “overcomes great obstacles through perseverance and determination.” While wearing one of his colorful suit jackets, he vowed to continue fighting his cancer and again thanked everyone for their support in his acceptance speech.
Just a couple days ago, Sager accepted another honor, receiving his induction into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
The sports world united behind Sager one final time Thursday after the announcement of his death. Athletes, coaches, fellow broadcasts and fans all shared their sadness upon the hearing of his passing.
