New Mexico Lobos running back Richard McQuarley pouned the UTSA Roadrunners en route to a victory in the New Mexico Bowl on Saturday.
The New Mexico Lobos and UTSA Roadrunners played the gritty football game that many were expecting in the New Mexico Bowl on Saturday, It wasn’t pretty and there were plenty of big hits in the windy conditions.
The Roadrunners would strike first blood on the day with a field goal and it looked like that was going to be it for the first half at times. Neither team’s rushing defense was giving an inch, until Richard McQuarley made his presence felt.
He would push in a touchdown to give the Lobos the lead and they never looked back. The Roadrunners and Lobos would each trade field goals before the end of the half. Even more incredibly, Lobos kicker Jason Sanders kicked one 52 yards against the wind to end the half.
In the second half, the Lobos extended their lead behind a Teriyon Gipson run. Before the Lobos could pull away, UTSA got closer. Dalton Sturm found Trevor Stevens for the first touchdown of the latter’s career. Sturm had an incredible day moving the ball on the ground and showed off his toughness in a losing effort.
Down three and needing a stop, the Roadrunners couldn’t stop McQuarley down on the goal line. The running back forced his way in and gave his team the score to put them back up by double digits. The Roadrunners would have one last try on offense and would score on a JaBryce Taylor touchdwon with 25 seconds remaining. The Lobos recovered the onside kick and celebrated with their fans as they won the 2016 New Mexico Bowl.
