Ron Dayne did indeed congratulate Donnel Pumphrey on breaking his record, but he threw a little shade in as well
Coming into the 2016 Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday between the San Diego State Aztecs and Houston Cougars, all eyes were on whether or not SDSU running back Donnel Pumphrey would etch his name in the record books forever. He needed just 108 yards to pass Ron Dayne on the all-time FBS rushing list, and he did snag that record with a 15-yard run in the third quarter.
Of course, though, this record is a point of contention for many. You see, Pumphrey’s yardage record includes his performances in bowl games, while Dayne’s does not. The NCAA didn’t start recognizing bowl game stats for this record until 2002.
So, following the record-breaking run, Dayne did take the time to congratulate the young man from San Diego State, but he also threw in a subtle reminder that he’s technically still the leader if you count his bowl games at 7,125 yards.
Congratulations young man #GOAT #7125

Well, I mean, he’s not really wrong here. There is a bit of unfairness that Dayne’s record could not include his bowl game outings, but that’s just the way things go when it comes to the NCAA. They’ve never really been known to make a lot of sense, so this isn’t surprising at all.

Still, this doesn’t take away from the amazing feat that Pumphrey accomplished on Saturday, and Dayne would certainly agree I presume. He holds no ill will towards the running back of the Aztecs, he just holds some ill will over the fact that his bowl game numbers can’t be counted as well.
